Supervision in Astronomy
- Undergraduate research: I accept students from any degree program, preferably from the second year onward. What I expect from undergraduate research students is an interest in writing code and doing data analysis. Keep an eye out for the PIBIC and PICT/ON calls on the Observatório Nacional website (they usually open mid-year).
- Master's: to enter the graduate program you need to take the EUF exam and have a good level of English. Keep an eye out for the application calls, which usually happen twice a year.
- PhD: unfortunately I'm not able to take on PhD students until mid-2027.
What if I'm a graduate student in another field?
In that case, it's important that you find a main advisor who is open to a collaboration. This will require good communication between everyone involved! In general, I'm happy to co-advise students from any STEM area.
Should I prepare a project?
Usually you don't need to, but I recommend having some idea of what you enjoy doing. I like to design projects around what best fits my student's career path, so it's important that you bring me as much information about yourself as possible. For a PhD, I recommend having some idea of a research direction.
What should I include in my first message?
Tell me your name, your degree program, and what stage you're at (undergraduate, starting graduate school, etc.). Tell me about your interests, without worrying about tying them to mine. I'd much rather get a first message that shows who you are and how you work than a ready-made message written by AI! :)
I don't look at GPA, grades, weighted averages, etc. I want to find out whether you're a curious person who will meet the goals of the program.
